How to Thrive in 2020 with Your High-Pressure Workplace and Silicon Valley Lifestyle

December 7, 2019 By Ann Helm

I recently read an article from Brad Stulberg in Outside Magazine that included interesting research about exercise and depression. As a former UCLA runner and lifelong fitness practitioner, I value daily exercise and preventative care to maintain optimum physical and mental health for all ages and lifestyles.

Two researchers cited in the article, Felipe Barrett Schuch and Brendon Stubbs, believe that exercise is just as important in the array of treatments for depression as talk therapy and medications. The research scope covered 49 studies and 267,000 people, and encompassed many different types of exercises.

Key Takeaways Based on the Research

  • Exercise reduces the chance of depression and prevents it altogether
  • With other treatments or preventatives for depression, exercise is just as important and should be included in a comprehensive plan
  • While chronic inflammation and depression are associated, exercise reduces inflammation — therefore exercise will reduce depression
  • Exercise can help the brain grow out of depressive patterns
  • Positive psychological changes happen with exercise and can increase self-confidence

Here in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area at large, a significant percentage of the workforce is working excessive hours while hunched over computers, and most likely not active enough given long hours. I get it, I’m a business owner. There’s pressure to create value for customers, achieve goals for team members and investors, and create high incomes for our families and retirement plans. According to Dr. Natalie Petouhoff in her 2017 HuffPost article, one could even say that work is “addictive” for many people. Long hours working with computer and mobile devices are often necessary to achieve goals and maintain job security – especially if you live in an expensive area like the San Francisco Bay Area.

On the flip side, high-pressure workplaces and career aspirations often cause business owners and employees to experience sleep deprivation, poor diets, isolation from family and friends, burnout and exhaustive stress. Look around you at your office. Many of your colleagues are working on their computers with a “C posture” for extended periods of time. This absolutely causes neck, back, shoulder, wrist, and hand injuries.

The combination of intense work environments, unhealthy habits while using computers and mobile phones and lack of exercise can lead to depression, injuries, and long-term physical and mental health problems. Fortunately for you and your coworker, by being proactive and taking your physical and mental health serious with fitness and injury prevention strategies, exercise can reduce and prevent depression and other medical conditions influenced by high-pressure workplaces and lifestyles.

Three Tips to Thrive in 2020 and Help Avert Disaster

  1. Commit to a minimum of 30 minutes, 5 days per week of sustained physical activity like walking, running, biking, rowing, etc.
  2. Use computing and mobile devices with safe postures to help increase productivity and prevent injuries; manage your health with these same devices and specialized apps

How to Use Your Smartphone to Prevent Injury, Pain and Unattractive Slouching

May 30, 2018 By Ann Helm

Smartphones are so convenient but, if you’re not paying attention, they will cause injuries, pain, and make you look unattractive.

Did you know that 2 billion smartphones are in use today? And this number is expected to rise to 6 billion by the year 2020. Texting, FaceTime, email, music, apps, and more! For better or worse, mobile phones have become an extension of our bodies.

Most of the time when we use our phones it’s with poor posture, and this is absolutely hurting our bodies. Take a look at people around you. How are they holding their phones? Are they sitting or standing upright – or are they slouching and looking down?

Slouching and looking down is a habitual posture that is causing neck, back and arm pain. In many cases, this is becoming an irreversible problem.

Watch this brief video to reduce pain, prevent injury, and make posture changes:

Because of our increasing reliance on smartphones, behaviors are changing as people are spending more time with these devices. Prolonged postures are a result, with slouching as the main go to position. Injuries to the neck, shoulders and upper back are increasing due to assumed slouched posture.

And with injury and pain also comes increased health costs for treatment intervention, and depending on level of pain, there is the loss of income and missing out on a higher-quality of life.

Share this post with email and your social channels to help colleagues, friends and family members change smartphone behaviors. Contact us to learn more about our physical therapy, fitness training, and corporate wellness program services.

Introducing Helm Wellness for Your Active, Digital Lifestyle

August 24, 2016 By Ann Helm

Update: My business named changed to HelmPT.com in January 2019

I’m thrilled to announce – at MediaPost’s Brand Marketers Summit in Tahoe – the launch of HelmWellness.com and our enhanced services including physical therapy, personal training, and customized wellness programs enabled by mobile, social and web technologies. While this marks a significant moment in time for my practice, I’ve been passionate about and helping to empower people to be and feel their best for more than 10 years as a physical therapist and certified personal trainer in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Why Helm PT, Now?
As we age, our bodies don’t always respond as we would hope but there are actions that can be taken to improve our response to the natural aging process. These actions come in the form of:

– physical therapy for injury, balance, neurological or medical issues
– personal fitness training for specific strength and flexibility needs
– custom wellness programs for individuals and groups

No matter what, we help inspire and/or maintain our patients’ levels of function and activities for any lifestyle!

There’s no question that mobile, social and web technologies are helping us to be more productive, communicate with greater ease, play games on-the-go, connect with friends and family at light speed, etc. In fact, Helm Wellness is launching as a digital business with unique tools and resources to better serve patients and their doctors. But the widespread adoption of technology – coupled with the natural aging process and minimal or strenuous activities at various stages of our lives – increases our risk of temporary or permanent injury, less range of comfortable motion, and generally not feeling our best.

Our Backstory

Ann (Mull) Helm, Founder of Helm PT

I became a certified personal fitness trainer in 1995 with the National Strength & Conditioning Association, and became a licensed Physical Therapist after graduating from the professional program in Physical Therapy at California State University, Sacramento in 1998.

Both my personal training and physical therapy background have helped me develop my business, where I am privileged to treat patients with injuries or educate and train them in injury prevention, as well as design and implement training programs for people who want personalized conditioning.

I am fortunate to have worked in many different physical therapy settings, including out-patient orthopedic clinics, hospitals, and home health companies, all with patients recovering from a variety of orthopedic and acute medical conditions. In addition, I have taught group classes for knee and back injury prevention, and I have been a lecturer at independent living facilities on fall prevention. My special areas of interest include rehabilitating those with orthopedic, medical, or neurological conditions, and training others for general fitness and fall prevention. I also specialize in myofascial release and/or massage and work with people of many ages, from the teen population to the geriatric population.

As a personal fitness trainer, I discuss with clients their goals and create customized fitness programs that will enable them to attain those goals. The education I provide adds to the clients’ understanding and purpose of specific exercises. I also focus on lifestyle change, helping with new conditioning and nutritional habits.

With the growing number of people dedicated to a healthy lifestyle, many people are living longer. As a result, I also work with people age 70 and over. Many want to prevent injuries or heal from an injury, find new ways to function daily with a physical deficit, improve their balance to prevent falls, and/or simply become stronger. I feel privileged to work with these individuals and am inspired every time I see their level of mobility and function improve for daily living, or when they attain the goals we have set together.

I grew up in Laguna Hills, CA, with my parents and 3 siblings. In my younger years, I played softball and then, at Laguna Hills High School, I ran cross country and track and field. In February, 2015 I was inducted into the Laguna Hills High School athletic Hall of Fame, for the records I had set while on the cross country and track and field teams at the high school. After high school I was recruited by UCLA to run cross country and track and field. I currently run on a women’s running club enjoying trail running and competing in 10km races and half marathons.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my two daughters and extended family. It is a gift to be able to enjoy my daughters’ sports and school activities, along with simply watching them grow into young ladies.
